چکیده

The recent measurements of weak lensing by large-scale structure present significant new opportunities for studies of the matter distribution in the universe. Here, we present a new cosmic shear survey carried out with the Echelle Spectrograph and Imager on the Keck II telescope. This covers a total of 0.6 square degrees in 173 fields probing independent lines of sight, hence minimising the impact of sample variance. We also extend our measurements of cosmic shear with the William Herschel Telescope (Bacon, Refregier & Ellis 2000) to a survey area of 1 square degree. The joint measurements with two independent telescopes allow us to assess the impact of instrument-specific systematics, one of the major difficulties in cosmic shear measurements. For both surveys, we carefully account for effects such as smearing by the point spread function and shearing due to telescope optics. We find negligible residuals in both cases and recover mutually consistent cosmic shear signals, significant at the 5.1σ level. We present a simple method to compute the statistical error in the shear correlation function, including non-gaussian sample variance and the covariance between different angular bins. We measure shear correlation functions for all fields and use these to ascertain the amplitude of the matter power spectrum,

Detection of Weak Gravitational Lensing by Large-scale Structure

We report a detection of the coherent distortion of faint galaxies arising from gravitational lensing by foreground structures. This “cosmic shear” is potentially the most direct measure of the mass power spectrum, as it is unaffected by poorly-justified assumptions made concerning the biasing of the distribution. Our detection is based on an initial imaging study of 14 separated 8 × 16 fields ...

Detection of Cosmic Shear with the William Herschel Telescope

Gravitational lensing by large-scale structure induces weak coherent alignments in the shapes of background galaxies. Here we present evidence for the detection of this ‘cosmic shear’ at the 3.4σ significance level with the William Herschel Telescope. Analysis and removal of notable systematic effects, such as shear induced by telescope optics and smearing by tracking and seeing, are conducted ...

An Enlarged Cosmic Shear Survey with the William Herschel Telescope

We report the results of a cosmic shear survey using the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma, to a depth of R = 25.8 (zs ≈ 0.8), over 4 square degrees. The shear correlation functions are measured on scales from 1 to 15, and are used to constrain cosmological parameters. We ensure that our measurements are free from instrumental systematics, by performing a series of tests including an ...

The present status of weak lensing analyses of clusters of galaxies and of cosmic shear surveys are presented and discussed. We focus on the impact of very large telescopes on present-day and future surveys and compare their potential with HST or wide field 4 meter telescopes.

Astrophysical Applications of Tunable Imaging Filters for the VLT

Tunable imaging filters have been used for a variety of science programmes on the Anglo-Australian and William Herschel Telescopes during the last five years. This contribution describes these novel devices and reviews the science (both Galactic and extragalactic) done with them. Possible strategies for implementing a tunable filter at the VLT are also discussed. Significant scientific potentia...
